World Nomads Travel Insurance Review

When backpacking abroad for 50 days in early 2018, I was covered with World Nomads travel insurance. Although I didn’t have to make a travel insurance claim, my experience with World Nomads was painless. It’s for that reason that I am writing this World Nomads travel insurance review.

I debated buying travel insurance before my trip. I initially saw it as an extra expense. But looking back, travel insurance gave me peace of mind, and it was worth every penny. With travel insurance from World Nomads, I was able to enjoy my travels without the stress of worrying about “what ifs”.

In my World Nomads travel insurance review, I talk about the cost of travel insurance. Additionally, I talk about what’s covered and what’s not covered. Read on below for details.

How Much Does Travel Insurance Cost

The price of travel insurance depends on the duration of your trip, your age, your destination(s), and how much coverage you need. For example as a 28 year old, World Nomads travel insurance cost me $272.24 for 3 months of travel in Spain, Italy, United Kingdom, and India under the Explorer Plan.

World Nomads Standard vs Explorer Plan

World Nomads has a Standard Plan and an Explorer Plan. The difference between the Standard Plan and the Explorer Plan is that the Explorer plan has additional coverage for extreme sports as well as higher coverage amounts for most categories. The price of the World Nomads Standard Plan for my trip was quoted at $189.06 while the Explorer Plan price was $272.24. I didn’t think I would do too many extreme sports, but I figured for an extra $83, the Explorer plan was a no-brainer for the additional peace of mind.

My World Nomads Travel Insurance Review

Purchasing travel insurance through World Nomads was painless. One week before I left the United States for Europe, I purchased my travel Insurance through WorldNomads.com. Within a matter of 5 minutes, my travel insurance coverage was active.

First, World Nomads asks you, “Which countries or regions are you traveling to?” Although I ended up not traveling to the United Kingdom, I selected Spain, Italy, United Kingdom, and India. Because the United Kingdom was a questionable destination, I made sure that the price of my travel insurance didn’t change based on this destination, which it didn’t.

Next, you enter the start date and end date of your trip. I entered January 17, 2018 to March 17, 2018. My trip ended up lasting a few days less, from January 18th to March 9th.

After entering the traveler’s age (28 for me at the time), you click on the “Get a quote” button to generate a customized travel insurance quote for your trip.

The travel insurance quote page details the coverages for the Standard Plan and the Explorer Plan. As mentioned, the Explorer Plan has coverage for adventure sports as well as additional coverage for some categories.

Does Travel Insurance Cover Laptops?

After generating my travel insurance quote and reading the World Nomads Travel Protection Plan documents, I still couldn’t determine if my laptop would be covered by travel insurance.

I called World Nomads customer service.  World Nomads explained to me that my laptop would not be covered in the event of theft or damage.  They did explain to me that renter’s insurance usually covers personal property. In my case, I already had renters insurance with personal property coverage, so I was set.

I am including this story in my World Nomads travel insurance review to illustrate how knowledgable and helpful customer service was during my interaction with them. Not only were they able to answer my question, but they didn’t oversell me and actually pointed me in the right direction.

In the end, I didn’t travel with my laptop after all, and I’m glad I didn’t. Taking a break from my laptop during my trip allowed me to embrace my destination rather than resorting to my laptop during downtime.

Simple and Flexible Travel Insurance

In India, I met a worried backpacker from Canada who didn’t have travel insurance. He just got done a 10 day silent meditation retreat, and was about to backpack through India. After introducing him to World Nomads, he bought the standard plan. I got much satisfaction when I saw the stress and worry dissipate away after he made the purchase.

I tell you this story because you can buy and claim online, even after you’ve left home. If you don’t think you need travel insurance now, that’s okay. Even when you get on the road, you can still get travel insurance coverage.

Additionally, travel insurance from WorldNomads.com is available to people from over 140 countries. Chances are, World Nomads has a plan for you.

Finally, World Nomads is designed for adventurous travelers with cover for overseas medical, evacuation, baggage and a range of adventure sports and activities.

Do I Need Travel Insurance?

I hope my World Nomads travel insurance review has helped you make a decision regarding travel insurance for your next trip.

The bottom line is that you don’t NEED travel insurance per se, but it is highly recommend. Travel insurance coverage inherently comes with peace of mind. You can either have a trip or have a trip with worry. Most would probably choose the former.
